International Research and Laboratory Exchange with Associate Professor Humberto Almeida Jr. of LUT University (Finland)

As part of NUT’s J-PEAKS project, we invited Associate Professor Humberto Almeida Jr. from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology (LUT University) in Finland for a short-term visit beginning on Sunday, May 10. LUT University is a benchmark institution for NUT's J-PEAKS initiative. The purpose of this visit was to establish a research network between the two universities and to build a framework for long-term institutional collaboration.

During his stay, President Kamado, Executive Director Takeda, and Vice President Miyashita received a courtesy call from Associate Professor Almeida. This visit provided an opportunity for a highly productive exchange of views on the future direction of ongoing international collaboration between the two universities.

On Monday, May 11, he spoke at a university-wide lecture titled “Introduction to LUT University: Toward Future Collaboration,” where he presented LUT’s cutting-edge initiatives. On Tuesday, May 12, he also delivered a lecture to faculty, staff, and students in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. This lecture focused on cutting-edge research regarding the microstructure of next-generation composite materials and data-driven design and manufacturing.

To foster the formation of a research network, Associate Professor Almeida visited several mechanical engineering laboratories on campus and toured the GX Center and DXR Center. He engaged in lively discussions with faculty members from various fields regarding the potential for international collaborative research. These discussions centered on his specialty—composite materials—as well as research facilities such as 3D printers and non-destructive testing equipment. He also exchanged views with researchers from Osaka Metropolitan University, a J-PEAKS partner university, regarding future collaboration.

This visit has led to the initiation of several international collaboration projects. NUT will continue to vigorously and systematically promote global educational, research, and personnel exchanges with LUT University, with the J-PEAKS initiative at the core.
